My home family network is closer than in the past, but also coronabored and stir-crazy :)     My so-called network on a personal level is spread all over and is only able to communicate online, or cellularly, and most of them don't and won't communicate online -- so it is mostly the usual text messaging along with phone calls.   My professional network online is more intact, on time, and responsive than I have ever experienced; but handling paperwork or basic legal issues, government requirements, or financially prudent tasks is more tedious and requires more pre-planning and patience than in the past.   My customer network seems to be mostly intact and ordering jerky online, but no amount of online sales can compete with busy 'in-season' weekends in the store, or well-attended, popular weekend events/festivals/markets we participate in all over the state.   So I am leaning on different parts of my network in various ways :)  I think most of us are 'adapting' best we can to this shift in civility.

(more) We opened our store in June of 2013.  We work with a team of about 6 total at any one time. Our store is open every day and we participate in over 100 events around the state each year.  We found our store in Friday Harbor during a 3-day visit to scope out 10 potential locations in Seattle and Friday Harbor.  We started with less than zero, our 1st, last, and current month's rent were all loaned out along with our beginning inventory and signage as part of the trademark agreement/independent ownership of 'Friday Harbor House Of Jerky'.  I, and my partner, later made the purchase from the founder /owner /recipe-creator /entrepreneur /negotiator /networker /business person for a more-than-fair-price! We now have the opportunity to own a store in Friday Harbor, on a beautiful island, in the San Juan Islands.  Plus, due to the exclusivity of our product; both in terms of offering the best quality, and the largest selection of jerky--anywhere in the Northwest, we have been accepted and invited to participate in the largest, most well-attended, well-known, fun and memorable events all over the great State of Washington.  We have created something bigger than 'we' ever were, and we are very proud of it.  They say running a small business is the only job you will ever want that requires longer hours on lesser pay than any job you've ever had! We have paid April's rent in full and on time, and we were offered a deferral on rent if we need it.  I think we can make it through June or July before we start springing leaks.  Our lease is also up, and I have decide whether to re-up our 5-year lease, at the same rate +CPI, or go for a 1-year lease at 'market value', which is $100 more per month than our rate +CPI.  This is not the time to have to make decisions on business leases, to say the least; but, I will make a decision and deal with it day-by-day just like all of us small business owners do every other day :) We have applied for the EIDL, which offers a $10k advanced bank deposit + the potential of borrowing up to $2 million at 1% interest over 30 years -- if it is not partially or totally forgiven based on what our future holds.  The caveat is there is no amount to apply for, no time frame for payment, no examples or ranges or chances of funds approval, no acceptance or denial thus far, so there is a lot left to ponder once you do apply.  I am still working on the PPP, as it seemingly 'requires' one going through a bank application process, and there are more hoops to jump through -- but it is forgivable if used properly.  We also have applied for the WWSBEG (Working Washington Small Business Emergency Grant) which is a grant offered by the county your business is in if your application is approved and accepted, San Juan County replied to our application and confirmed their receipt of it and said, "the review process takes place within 10 days; we will keep you posted as soon as we can". This stimulus money that has been approved by Congress, although it was received sooner by big business than by small business, is urgently needed and it is approaching a point of no return for many small business owners some of whom have already folded and some of whom will not be able to handle their budgets and manage to stay in business past next weekend.    We wish everyone only the best during this rough time, and hope to see brighter better days in the very near future.

(more) Our store in Friday Harbor, WA is in a tourist destination and it would usually be picking up for the season starting with "Spring Breakers" traveling around the country--but hotel and lodging reservation are being canceled around the area, and we are experiencing fewer people riding the ferries to the island as well.  Each of the past 7 years, we have participated in 100+ annual events around WA State; but, due to precautions regarding the Coronavirus, any gathering of 250+ people is illegal, so ALL of our March events have been canceled -- 10+ events wiped out this month!  Next month's events are on hold until further notice, so my team is in a holding pattern until we know whether they will take place as scheduled or be canceled.  Orders are up in the air, future events are iffy, travel to the island is screwy, and 2 months like this I will probably have to release my team if they haven't left, 3 months of this could sink the ship!

(more) WOW! Lots of great important information here!  I will add that different people need different amounts of time OFF, and different frequencies of time OFF as well. Our business makes a significant amount of its revenue during the holiDAY season, so taking time OFF during the holidays is not an option -- other than the 3 DAYs we take off every year (Thanksgiving, Christmas Day & New Years Day). Then there is pragmatism -- certain things will not be handled if you do not handle them yourself! My partner and I moved across the country, started with nothing, and are now in Year 7! I work fine taking 1 week OFF (camping) each year to rejuvenate and refresh -- any longer than that and I start feeling guilty about opportunity costs. My partner needs time OFF every few months, and once a year she needs to be FAR AWAY from the business in order to detach and relax enough to be able to refresh her creativity.  Then she forms new ideas, and new goals, and re-motivates in order to realize her desire to return, continue our venture, and propel the business forward. This is a VERY complex, personally critical, and individual decision-making process.  This cannot be taught in a class; because it cannot be comprehended or understood without experiencing it for yourself.  Plus, one may be locked-up for rambling-on about such matters 🤪
