What device? If you and I both search "pizza" from our respective homes we'd get very different results. For this reason rankings can be deceiving. And there is no clear roadmap as that's the point of the Google algorithm - to keep people from gaming it. The best way to set yourself up for success is to make sure you are completely localized (disclaimer: this is one of the things I do for a living) and make sure your site is in good shape from a technical (healthy and fast) and content (useful and sharable) SEO perspective (disclaimer: we also do this). I would then make your best efforts to try to get as many good genuine reviews on the following platforms as possible googlefacebookyelpfoursquareand any directories/sites that are related to your business That should be a good start and it won't happen overnight. It's going to take a little while depending on your market and competition. The more accurate your business is in the google (and other ecosystems) the better as this is giving people exactly what they are looking for. I wouldn't be putting in your listing that you do personal training if you are a gym that doesn't offer that service. Happy to go back and forth on this but this is probably the most clear and succinct answer you will get on this question.

Things like advertising, social, SEO, etc are all being scrutinized more now. The people that spend the money on these things want to know that they are actually bringing their business value. Data and analytics have gotten center stage on this. If you can't measure it, it's hard to justify it. Measuring this stuff takes some technical acumen when it comes to the online world so this is another challenge. Marketing and operations have become much more technical over the last few years and those that have not kept up are WAY behind. There are mixed responses to this. The smart ones bring in an employee or a trusted vendor that can navigate those waters for them since they are not usually in the technology business. Some dig their heels in and insist they don't need it. Some are right, most are wrong.

Unless someone DM's you on facebook and you cultivate the lead from there it's nearly impossible for most businesses to consistently attribute new sales to the channel. The same holds true for all channels - social media or otherwise (paid, email, referral, affiliate, organic, etc). Social media being "free" makes it hard to justify actually paying professionals to help you with it on any front. Plus, small business owners are so budget conscience they either a) think they can properly do it themselves or b) hold off until they have the time to do it right (which is usually never). It's all too common. If you can't measure it, it's hard to justify putting resources into it - and I'm inclinded to agree. If you don't REALLY know if it's working then why do it? Faith?
