Today's PSA: If you still pay your federal or state payroll taxes yourself (instead of through a payroll provider), ALWAYS save all of your payment confirmations for a few years.

To date, I have more than one client who has an issue with the IRS, claiming that they didn't get payments, couldn't match payments, etc., from FOUR years ago. Each situation has required multiple correspondences and requests for information already sent, but that's another topic for another day.

I onceasked a CPA how long I shouldsave these payroll tax payment conformations. He replied that there should be no reason to save anything older than a year. I'm glad I didn't listen to him, whether because of a conscious decision or laziness.
