I have often times been far too lazy when it comes to making networking events, but this year I joined up with one that meets weekly. There have been times I just didnt want to get up extra early to go, and it can be a little challenging to say the same thing each week in a new way; but it is a way to meet people you otherwise would never have connected with. I have thus far picked up a few small projects from the group, but over the long haul, the hope is that I will get recommendations from the other members of the group to people they know. So it is often not who is in the room itself, but the multiplier of who they know and interact with too.

Some clients take it to heart and give me very clean almost perfect copy, other times it is a mess and we will go through several revisions after I have set up the document. There are also times where I will build the design — such as a brochure — using "greek" copy as a placeholder which will create a word count. There are those clients that will adhere to the count, and others who provide live content that does not fit the space allotted — being too short or often times too long. Ideally, clients should have the text proofread prior to providing it to a designer and we should take the time to proof it prior to going to press or publishing anything — extra eyeballs is always a good thing.

I am of the mind that a logo should be well designed and viable for reproduction at all sizes print and digital. It should communicate what the business does and be a one-of-a-kind "mark." It should be effective as a black or 1 color solution along with the color solution. Ideally, it would be effective as art without type even some effective logos will use a company name as a part of the visual.  Without question, a well designs and professional business card is still a top item and goes hand-in-hand with a logo. Too often, I have attended networking meetings, and there are people without business cards. I am not sure how this is a viable way to sell oneself. The business card is still ubiquitous to be effective at any meeting.

I will expand on that further by considering myself to be a graphic design engineer that creates print and digital design solutions. I think a big thing to include in your pitch is the "why." Why do you do what you do? What drives you to be creative, artistic and seek the work?

There are many avenues for you to consider for how you reach out — google ad words, social media campaigns, banner ads on websites that reach your target audience, direct mail, promotional products.  I think one other thing you can do is when you decide on how you will run your campaign — you may want to do some split testing.  Speaking from the point of view of a graphic designer, it is easy to believe int he concept you have created for your marketing, but by split testing the message with different visuals and taglines you may find certain looks and language resonate better with your audience than other visuals.  if you hire me to create one social media graphic, creating variations on that theme is financially worth it. I can create, 3-5 sets of visuals with the same theme and then you can send them out over a period of time — see which one gets the most likes, shares, and comments. It is just another way to broaden your appeal to potential customers.

(more) I am starting to wonder if "Graphic Designer" is going to become a niche profession — more so than it may be already. I have long felt like too many would be clients think design and moreover layout, is "easy" and just about "anyone" can do it. The advent of Canva seems to be a go to for a lot of businesses now where they'll just have their admin do it rather than invest is a graphic designer who can design something properly. Even branding seems to be taking a back seat in favor of the "just have my secretary do it."  This is pervasive with smaller business clients in particular. I believe this poses a direct threat to a great many of us who have relied smaller end business clients who don't seem to care all that much about their presentation. There was already a ton of trash out there in terms of design. Now I feel like there is even more.  AI is also going to pose a huge threat. I have started to contemplate how the job of "graphic designer" will almost become obsolete. Much like the "Service Bureau" or typesetter became obsolete with the computer being right there. I can still remember how to make a mechanical but how many of us really know how to do that (not that we need to know). Point is — I see things like Canva and AI as major threats to a great many designers. I see the industry narrowing down considerably over the next 10 years where it will increasingly become a specialty. I see many of us already pushing to find new work and Im not sure how many jobs/projects are out there.
